Hello Trivia Buffs! Today we are sharing The History of Popcorn, which seems like a great place to start with our first weekly posting of "kernel" chronicles.

  • During the Great Depression, many businesses failed, however popcorn sales thrived because it cost 5-10 cents. Popcorn became a source of income for struggling farmers.

  • During WWII, the production of candy diminished, so Americans ate 3 times as much popcorn.

  • In 1938, popcorn machines were installed in movie theaters, and no surprise, the sale of popcorn was more profitable than movie tickets. (Hmmm, just like today!)

  • In 1970, our friend Orville launched Redenbacher's popcorn, and in 1981, General Mills received the first patent on microwave popcorn in a bag (44 years ago)!

  • That's a long, 87 year old POPPING history! At Golden Isles Gourmet Popcorn, we are making history too, by being the first true gourmet popcorn company located in Glynn County, Georgia. We look forward to providing you with the best handcrafted, unique gourmet popcorn, pretzels and pecans.

Have a POP-Tastic Day!
